Understanding Self and Others

Understanding Self and Others (USO) is a pioneering intervention programme designed to build and enhance resilience, emotional management, effective coping, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills in schools.

This programme is highly flexible and can be adapted for a range of ages and needs.

Understanding Self and Others (USO)

USO draws on the current empirical evidence to address areas of need using proven responsive techniques and is designed to be delivered within the school environment over the school term/year. This programme, written by Matthew Russell and Dr Nicola Graham-Kevan, is modular and sequentially builds on previous skills – its structure allowing the key areas to be implemented as a stand-alone, in either a group or individual setting.

Delivery

Each of the key areas are modular and designed to be incorporated into the school term time (averaging a six weekly one-hour session), to be delivered by a trained member of staff.

Following COVID restrictions, we moved all our programmes to virtual delivery. Evaluation conducted by Professor Nicola Graham-Kevan told us that clients found this format more accessible and convenient than in-person delivery. In terms of programme content, group members reported that using technology allowed them to be more open with the group and so enhanced their engagement.

Many of our group members have conditions such as depression, anxiety and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and they found that meeting virtually made the programmes more accessible for them.

Due to the over whelming positive results of this delivery method, our USO programmes will continue to be delivered via Zoom, although in person delivery is still available if required.
